Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be an international student as defined by the Higher Education Support Act 2003, excluding Australian citizens and permanent residents.
  • Must hold Indian citizenship and be a current resident of the slum communities in Delhi, India, where the Asha Society works. Proof of residency is required.
  • Must have applied for, but not yet commenced, a postgraduate coursework degree at the University of Sydney at the time of application for the award.
  • Applicants commencing a second degree at the University of Sydney are not eligible.
  • Applicants must first meet all requirements set by the Asha Community Health and Development Society (ASHA) and be recommended as a preferred candidate by this organization.

Application Process

  • No separate scholarship application is required. Nominations are made by the Asha Community Health and Development Society (ASHA).

 

  • Documents Required:
    • Proof of Indian citizenship.
    • Proof of residency in the specified slum communities in Delhi.
    • Completed application for a postgraduate coursework degree at the University of Sydney.
    • Additional documents as required by ASHA for their nomination process.

Scholarship Benefits

  • Funding Coverage:
    • Full tuition fees for the postgraduate studies.
    • Annual living allowance of $12,000 AUD per year.
    • Reimbursement of up to $4,000 AUD per year for textbooks and one annual return flight to India upon presentation of receipts.
    • Overseas Health Cover for the duration of the program (single cover only).
    • Student Services and Amenities Fee.
    • On-campus accommodation for the duration of the program.
       
  • Duration of Funding:
    • Covers the normal full-time duration of the postgraduate coursework degree.
       
  • Extra Benefits:
    • Opportunity to reside in on-campus accommodation, enhancing the university experience.
    • Comprehensive support covering various aspects of student life, including health insurance and study materials.

Additional Details

  • Selection Criteria:
    • The scholarship is awarded based on academic merit, financial need, and a personal statement assessed from the student's application for admission to a postgraduate coursework degree.
    • ASHA collaborates with the University of Sydney to identify potential candidates and makes recommendations to the Vice-President External Engagement (or their delegate) for consideration.
       
  • Conditions:
    • Recipients must complete the acceptance of their unconditional admission offer by the deadline associated with their scholarship offer round. 
    • Failure to do so will result in the scholarship offer being rescinded.
      Recipients must remain enrolled at the University of Sydney after the census date.
    • Living allowance payments are made to the student's Australian bank account after the census date of each semester; however, the first installment will be made within seven business days upon arrival.
    • Textbook and flight reimbursements are processed in April and September each year upon submission of receipts.
    • Deferral or suspension of the scholarship is not permitted.
    • The scholarship is offered subject to the availability of funds.
    • Recipients are expected to return to India post-graduation as per the agreement between ASHA and the selected scholar.
