Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be admitted to the PhD program in Archaeology at UCLA.​
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent is required.​
  • Nonresident students receive non-resident tuition (NRT) coverage for the first year and are expected to establish California residency thereafter. International students entering with an MA degree typically receive NRT coverage for the first two years, after which NRT is waived upon advancement to candidacy.​

Application Process

  • Submit the UCLA Graduate Division application, selecting the Interdepartmental Archaeology PhD program.​
  • $135 for U.S. applicants; $155 for international applicants. Fee waivers may be available for eligible applicants.​
     
  • Supporting Documents:
    • Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
    • Three letters of recommendation.
    • Statement of Purpose and Personal History Statement.
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume.
    • TOEFL or IELTS scores for international applicants.​

       

Scholarship Benefits

  • Funding Coverage
    • Full payment of tuition and fees, including student health insurance.​
    • Annual living expense stipend, with a minimum of $30,000 for any support on campus.​
    • Initial year of fees and stipend.​
    • At least two years of TA-ships at UCLA.
    • Additional years of fellowship funding available by application (e.g., Graduate Research Mentorship).​
       
  • Extra Benefits:
    • Support for research travel abroad through applications for foreign research fellowships, with program assistance and in absentia registration.​
    • Final year of thesis completion typically funded through a competitive Dissertation Year Fellowship from the Graduate Division.​
    • Summer funding for research travel and fieldwork supported by endowed funds from the Friends of Archaeology and the Steinmetz Family Foundation, as well as Graduate Summer Research Mentorships and Dean’s Scholar awards.​
