Eligibility Criteria

  • A completed bachelor's degree.
     
  • Application Materials:
    • Writing sample (fiction or poetry).
    • Three letters of recommendation.
    • Statement of purpose.
    • College transcripts.
    • TOEFL or IELTS scores (for non-native English speakers).
       
  • Selection Criteria:
    •  Demonstrated excellence in writing and a commitment to the literary arts.​

    • Writing sample (fiction or poetry).

Additional Details

  • The MFA program requires two full years of residency in Baltimore, with students taking two courses per semester: a writing workshop in poetry or fiction, and a second “readings in literature” course taught within the department.
  • Students produce a first-year portfolio and a second-year thesis in their chosen genre.
  • Graduates often find their first book published within three years and have won prestigious prizes such as Stegner Fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
