Helen Zell Writers' Program (MFA in Creative Writing)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent by the time of expected enrollment
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores required for non-native English speakers.
  • Applicants must choose to concentrate in either fiction or poetry; dual applications are not permitted.

Application Process

  • Complete the online application through the Rackham Graduate School website.
  • Submit all required materials, including transcripts and recommendation letters.
  • Ensure all materials are submitted by the application deadline.​
     
  • Documents Required:
    • Online application form.
    • Transcripts.
    • Letters of recommendation.
    • Statement of purpose.
    • Writing sample (portfolio).
    • Proof of English language proficiency (if applicable).

Scholarship Benefits

  • Funding Coverage:
    • Full tuition waiver for each term of enrollment.
    • Stipend of $25,980 per year (as of 2023–2024).
    • Health insurance coverage.
    • $6,000 in summer funding.
    • Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) positions with training and pedagogical support.
       
  • Duration of Funding:
    • Two years, with a third-year Zell Fellowship available to six qualifying graduates.
       
  • Extra Benefits:
    • Access to various fellowships and prizes, including the Henfield Prize in Fiction and the Farrar Memorial Playwriting Grant.
    • Opportunities to participate in the Zell Visiting Writers Series and other literary events.​
