Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be admitted to the PhD program in Social Welfare at UC Berkeley.
- A master's degree in social work or a closely related field is preferred.
- The program is full-time; part-time enrollment is not permitted.
Application Process
- Submit the UC Berkeley Graduate and Professional Application for Admission.
- $135 for U.S. applicants; $155 for international applicants.
- Supporting Documents:
- Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- Statement of Purpose and Personal History Statement.
- Sample of scholarly written work.
- Current résumé or CV.
- TOEFL scores for international applicants.
Scholarship Benefits
- Funding Coverage
- Full payment of tuition and fees, including student health insurance.
- Annual living expense stipend, funded through a combination of fellowships and Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) or Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) appointments.
- Duration of Funding
- Five years of financial support, contingent upon satisfactory academic progress.
- Five years of financial support, contingent upon satisfactory academic progress.
- Extra Benefits:

- Eligibility for external funding opportunities and awards.
- Conference travel grants of up to $1,500, with the possibility of an additional grant in the final, job-seeking year.
