Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be admitted to the PhD program in Social Welfare at UC Berkeley.​
  • A master's degree in social work or a closely related field is preferred.​
  • The program is full-time; part-time enrollment is not permitted.​

Application Process

  • Submit the UC Berkeley Graduate and Professional Application for Admission.​
  •  $135 for U.S. applicants; $155 for international applicants.​
     
  • Supporting Documents:
    • Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
    • Three letters of recommendation.
    • Statement of Purpose and Personal History Statement.
    • Sample of scholarly written work.
    • Current résumé or CV.
    • TOEFL scores for international applicants.​

Scholarship Benefits

  • Funding Coverage
    • Full payment of tuition and fees, including student health insurance.
    • Annual living expense stipend, funded through a combination of fellowships and Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) or Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) appointments.​
       
  • Duration of Funding
    • Five years of financial support, contingent upon satisfactory academic progress.​
       
  • Extra Benefits:
    • Access to additional departmental fellowships and awards.​
    • Eligibility for external funding opportunities and awards.​
    • Conference travel grants of up to $1,500, with the possibility of an additional grant in the final, job-seeking year.​
