Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum of five years of professional journalism experience.​
  • Applicants must be currently working in some aspect of journalism for a news organization or as an independent journalist.​
  • Reporters, editors, data experts, visual journalists, audio producers, engagement specialists, designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and organizational change agents.​
  • Must be U.S. citizens, regardless of their current location or employer.
  • Non-U.S. citizens, even if working in the U.S. or for U.S.-based organizations.​
  • Proficiency in English is required.

Application Process

  • Access the online application portal via the 
  • Fill out the initial application form, which includes personal information, professional experience, and preliminary project ideas.​
  • Upload all necessary documents as specified in the application guidelines.​
  • Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews and further evaluation.​
     
  • Documents Required:
    • Completed application form
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • Personal statement outlining the proposed journalism project
    • Work samples (e.g., articles, reports, multimedia content)
    • Letters of recommendation (typically two)
    • Proof of English proficiency (if applicable)​

Scholarship Benefits

  • Stipend
    • $85,000 distributed monthly from August through April for living expenses.​
       
  • Relocation Support
    • $5,000 to assist with moving expenses.​
       
  • Additional Support:
    • Health insurance coverage.
    • Costs for auditing university courses.
    • Participation in required workshops and fellowship activities.
    • Assistance with finding and securing housing.​
    • Eight months, from late August through April.​
       
  • Extra Benefits:
    • Access to specialized resources and faculty at the University of Michigan.
    • Private seminars with newsroom leaders, change agents, and world-renowned experts.
    • Workshops to enhance professional skills and leadership abilities.
    • International travel to understand global political, economic, and social forces.
