Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must have participated in an eligible UC–HBCU summer program.​
  • Must be admitted to a UCLA Ph.D. program.​
  • Open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, international students, and undocumented students who qualify for nonresident supplemental tuition exemptions under AB 540.​

Application Process

  • Interested individuals should contact their prospective home department or program's Graduate Student Advisor or Student Affairs Officer for specific application procedures.​
  • Submit the standard UCLA Graduate Division application for the desired Ph.D. program.​
  • Provide all required materials as specified by the chosen department, which may include transcripts, letters of recommendation, statements of purpose, and other relevant documents.​
  • Application deadlines vary by department; applicants should consult their specific program for exact dates.

Scholarship Benefits

  • Funding Coverage
    • Years 1: UCOP provides financial support covering tuition, fees, and a living stipend.​
    • Years 2–3: The student's home department provides financial support or teaching/research assistantships, including tuition and fees.​
    • Years 4–5: UCLA's Division of Graduate Education provides financial support covering tuition, fees, and a living stipend.​
    • Transition Award: A one-time $3,000 living supplement provided by UCOP in the first year.​
    • Professional Development: A $5,000 award from UCOP for professional development activities, usable at any time during the five-year period.​
    • Conference Support: UCOP covers expenses for awardees to attend the President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship annual fall meeting twice during their Ph.D. program.​
       
  • Duration of Funding
    • Five years, distributed as outlined above.​
