Projects/Thesis
1
Generating insight into the economical/environmental effects of utilizing less processed sugar beet-derived carbohydrate-containing streams for fermentation.Cosun Beet Company
The objectives were as follows: • To conceptualize different fermentation processes for different derivatives of sugarbeet processing. • Ranking these processes based on economic potential and process complexity (downstream processing). • Detailed process design for chosen alternative (single cell protein by whole sugar beet fermentation).
2
Intensification of MCC synthesis unit in the then Union Carbide Bhopal plant to incorporate inherent safetyTU Delft
The scope of this project was to redesign the MCC synthesis step of the MIC route to produce carbaryl, using the principles of Process Intensification. The primary bottlenecks in the process were highlighted, followed by a list of design alternatives that could potentially replace the components used the MCC synthesis unit, in order to make the step inherently safe and more efficient. The most suitable alternative was evaluated by comparing the alternatives with each other in a competitive matrix where different parameters were given weightage factors, which helped us to rank the alternatives. Finally, a redesigned inherently safer MCC synthesis unit was proposed at the end of the project.
3
Advanced downstream separation of butanediols (BDO) from fermentation brothsTU Delft, Process Systems Engineering
• Designed a flexible and intensified downstream process for 2,3-BDO, 1,4-BDO and 1,3-BDO with 45-80% lower energy requirements than existing literature. • Conducted techno-economic analysis and calculated sustainability metrics to assess the performance and impact of the designed process
4
Techno-Economic and Environmental Evaluation of integrating media recycling in cultured meat productionMeatable
• Conducted a Basis of Design as part of a multicultural team, by evaluating separation technologies to recover ammonia, lactate and proteins from spent culture media • Designed the chosen separations on SuperPro and performed techno-economic and environmental (shortcut LCA) analysis.
