Power to Methanol technology using Methane via Anaerobic digestionMax Planc Research Institute x OVGU Universität
The project evaluates the environmental impact of producing methanol via Power-to-Methanol technology using methane from anaerobic digestion, compared to conventional methods. The process involves biogas conversion, CO2 separation, steam reforming, hydrogenation, and purification, modeled in Aspen Plus. The functional unit is 1 kg of methanol. The life cycle analysis (LCA), using the ReCiPe 2016 method, shows that adding renewable hydrogen increases water consumption and human health impacts compared to production without it. While bio-methanol isn’t yet commercially competitive, future regulations could enhance its viability. The study aligns with sustainable development goals and COP21 commitments
